Models Own Week: Ice Neons Vertical Rainbow Gradient

It's Day 5 of Models Own Week!  I've been meaning to do a gradient mani with the Models Own Ice Neon Collection for ages so this seemed like a good opportunity.  I do wish I could capture just how incredibly neon these polishes are in daylight - they are so awesome - but in photos they just don't seem to have the same impact.

To do these, I painted a base of Models Own Snow White to make the neons pop.  I then used the make up sponge method (there's a tutorial here I did) to apply the neons - I wanted a rainbow effect but the green/purple nail didn't really work!  What I'm looking for is a proper neon blue polish, but I haven't found one yet.  In hindsight these probably would have looked good with some sort of black nail art over the top.  Ah, there's always a next time, right?

Models Own Week: Fruit Pastels Chevrons

It's Models Own Week Day 4!  I love chevron mani designs - but for some reason I haven't done many of them.  I did one a couple of weeks ago on just one nail to see how it turned out and thought it was cute, so today I tried a whole hand of them with the Models Own Fruit Pastels Collection.  They remind me a lot of Easter eggs, so I'm potentially a little bit late to the party on these ones, but I wanted to make the most of pastels whilst the sun is still shining - because before too long it's going to be autumnal colours on my nails to go with the weather.

For this design I did a base of each Fruit Pastel, then cut myself some zig zag chevron strips of Scotch tape with some craft scissors I picked up at Tiger for a couple of pounds.  I put a quick dry top coat (No 7 Stay Perfect) over the base colours and waited until they were completely dry before I used tweezers to stick the tape onto my nails.  Then I painted a different pastel over the top, let it dry for a few seconds before using the tweezers to pull off the Scotch tape (don't wait for the polish to dry completely - otherwise the Scotch tape will get stuck).

I have to say that I find the Fruit Pastels quite difficult to work with - they seem to take quite a while to dry and because they're quite thick polishes, getting them smooth is a little hard sometimes.  Quick dry top coat is a total essential with these!

I think I prefer the chevrons without top coat, actually - without it it has a slightly squidgy look which is quite fun.  What do you think?  Squidgy or smooth?

Models Own Week: July 4th American Themed Nails

On Saturday I went to Emily of Blog Me Beautiful's July 4th American themed birthday party (her husband's birthday was July 4th!) - and since I was a bit rubbish and didn't get a costume together, I went for giving my nails an American-themed mani.  The new Models Own Velvet Goth and Fireworks Collections arrived on Saturday morning so I couldn't resist using them in a couple of the nails.

I used a base of Models Own Snow White with various Models Own polishes on top - Fireworks Banger* and Rocket* on my thumb, Velvet Goth Sardonyx* and Valerian* for the spots on my index finger and the stars on my little finger, Born Pretty Store glequins on my middle finger and Raspberry Crush and Dream Steam with the White Nail Art Pen on my ring finger.

Swatch Round Up: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

I thought I'd do one final post on the Models Own Fireworks Collection - a little round up of all five polishes over a plain white base to show up the glitters most effectively.  There are also a few little macro shots of the glitters and full hand swatches of the polishes - click on the photos to take you to the original swatch post.

Click on these links to go to the individual swatches: Sparkler, Rocket, Banger, Catherine Wheel and Roman Candle.

Overall I adore these glitters - they're bright, fun and definitely remind me of fireworks.  Application is quick and easy, though a quick dry top coat will help the polish to dry a bit more speedily.  My favourites are Banger and Roman Candle, though the more I look at Catherine Wheel the more I like that one too!

Rocket: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

Continuing day two of Models Own Week.  This is the final swatch from the new Models Own collection - Fireworks.  The collection is described as the "latest glitter explosion!  Five ultra fun nail polishes, formulated with a clear base - each polish is packed full of numerous colourful glitters all in varying shapes and sizes.  The range of multi-faceted fragments in each polish allows you to choose the intensity you want depending on the effect you are aiming to achieve."

The fourth is Rocket - which apparently contains seven glitters - (but I can only identify five!) - chubby red strands, orange hex glitter, teeny red polka dots, teeny red and black flecks.  It's another one, like Catherine Wheel, that screams of November with the colour of the glitters.  It has good coverage in one coat and the polish goes on easily with a non-gloopy clear base (which did take a while to dry).  It's not my favourite in the collection, to my mind it's lacking something - I'm just not quite sure what.  I do think the chubby red glitter strands are cute though.

I put Rocket on top of a variety of bases to show how it looks - from thumb to little finger: Models Own Raspberry Crush, Models Own Snow White, naked nail, Models Own Black Magic, Models Own Strawberry Tart.

Roman Candle: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

Continuing day two of Models Own Week.  This is the penultimate swatch from the new Models Own collection - Fireworks.

The fourth is Roman Candle - which contains six glitters - long black and silver strands, tiny pink polka dots, orangey pink hex glitter and silver flecks.  Because of the tiny particles in it, it has really good coverage and I love looking at all the different colours and shapes in it.  This is one of my favourites in the collection - I particularly like the black strands which I think are quite unusual.  The polish goes on easily and the clear base isn't gloopy, but I found that it did take a little while to dry. The glitter didn't take too much arranging because it's quite a dense glitter - one coat is probably plenty (I did two below and it's a bit over the top)!

I put Roman Candle on top of a variety of bases to show how it looks - from thumb to little finger: Nails Inc Phoenix Place, Models Own Snow White, naked nail, Models Own Black Magic, Models Own Grape Juice.

Catherine Wheel: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

Continuing day two of Models Own Week.  This is the third swatch from the new Models Own collection - Fireworks.

The third is Catherine Wheel - which contains four glitters - mini gold strands, tiny red polka dots, orangey red hex glitter and little gold flecks.  It's not as dense a glitter top coat as Sparkler or Banger are, but it is very pretty and certainly screams November to me!  The polish goes on easily and the clear base isn't gloopy, but I found that it did take a little while to dry. The glitter took a bit of arranging to get it where I wanted on the nail but because the glitter was a bit sparse, you may want to put two coats on.  I just went for one in the photos below.

I put Catherine Wheel on top of a variety of bases to show how it looks - from thumb to little finger: 17 Go Go, Models Own Snow White, naked nail, Models Own Black Magic, Models Own Banana Split.

Banger: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

Continuing day two of Models Own Week.  This is the second swatch from the new Models Own collection - Fireworks.

The second is Banger - which contains five glitters - long blue strands, dark blue hex glitter, teeny pink polka dots, small turquoise hex glitter and tiny tiny sliver flecks.  I love the variety in this glitter top coat - it's so much fun and looks good over lots of colour base coats.
The polish goes on easily and the clear base isn't gloopy, but I found that it did take a little while to dry. The glitter took a bit of arranging to get it where I wanted on the nail but there was plenty of glitter so only one coat was needed on the nails which had a base coat.

I put Banger on top of a variety of bases to show how it looks - from thumb to little finger: Essie Avenue Maintain, Models Own Snow White, naked nail, Models Own Black Magic, Models Own Blueberry Muffin.

Sparkler: Models Own Fireworks Collection*

It's day two of Models Own Week on Fundamentally Flawless! Today I've got more swatches to show you of the second of Models Own's new collections - Fireworks.

I do love a glitter top coat - but I often shy away from them because they're such an effort to remove!  (I haven't yet tried the tinfoil method and I'm a bit too lazy and impatient to use the PVA glue base coat method).  Glitter top coats, however, are great fun and these new Fireworks glitters are no exception - and what I love about them is the difference in glitters in each polish.

The first is Sparkler - which just contains one glitter - holographic silver strands, which give rainbow colours in the light.  This is possibly my least favourite of the collection, just because there's no variation in the glitters like the other polishes in the collection.  That said, it is very pretty and looks awesome over a black base coat (I would definitely wear it over a coloured base coat rather than by itself).

The polish goes on easily and the clear base isn't gloopy, but I found that it did take a little while to dry. The glitter took a bit of arranging to get it where I wanted on the nail but there was plenty of glitter so only one coat was needed on the nails which had a base coat.

I put Sparkler on top of a variety of bases to show how it looks - from thumb to little finger: Essie In the Cabana, Models Own Snow White, naked nail, Models Own Black Magic, Barry M Grey
